Where to stay in Santorini

If you are visiting Santorini, you probably already know the story of its creation. Born out of a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, Santorini is often associated with the myth of the Lost Atlantis. The island used to be round, and was named “Stroggili” or “The round island” but with the eruption, the middle part sunk to the bottom and created this crescent shape that is now recognizable worldwide.

For the best views and a once in a lifetime experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world, you might want to book a room with a view of the caldera. Santorini has some incredible honeymoon destination hotels that are known for luxury, privacy, adult-only spaces, and the best views the island can offer. If this will be a kid-friendly honeymoon, there are plenty of hotels for you as well though!

The most famous villages around Santorini are located on the side of the caldera. Places like Oia, Firostefani, Fira, and Imerovigli will be where you find world-class hotels and villas for your romantic moments.

It will come as no surprise that the view costs more than your “average” room on the island but considering how limited space is and the fact that Santorini is the only inhabited volcano caldera in the world, then it is more than worth it in our opinion.

Things to do in Santorini

There is no denying the popularity of Santorini. To make sure you get exactly what you are after it is best to book ahead and browse popular activities on the island in advance. From May to September, the island is operating at full capacity, with the most popular period being August. However, hotels and restaurants in Santorini have started to expand their months of operation and you will now find establishments during the winter months as well.

A winter honeymoon in Santorini may not include beach-hopping but you can still get a private jacuzzi with views of the volcano!

The island of Santorini is blessed with a great production of wines and especially the varieties of Assyrtiko and Vinsanto.

Assyrtiko is a white variety that has become synonymous with Santorini. After all, 90% of it is produced on the island. A gentle and easy to drink wine that pairs perfectly with the Mediterranean dishes and especially fresh fish. For a dessert-wine option, Vinsanto makes the perfect apéritif.

There are many beautiful wineries that you can visit and spend your day tasting local varieties and learning more about the cultivations on the island. SantoWines is one of the most modern wineries in Greece, that welcomes guests on a spectacular property with multi-level and views towards the expansive vineyard.

Sunset Tour of Santorini & Surrounding Islands

This is one of the best and most romantic ways to see the splendour of Santorini up close.

There are a great number of options from private to group tours with catamarans and sailing vessels being the most popular option. Many of the tours can be combined with dinner but you will also get a sample of local wines and the famous Assyrtiko while you sail into the sunset in style. Just don’t schedule anything else for the rest of your night because this is best enjoyed as a whole day out at sea experience.

One of the companies we use and trust for our clients is Sunset Oia but there are a lot of options available to suit your budget and preferences.

Photography Tour

There is no doubt that Santorini is the vacation of a lifetime. People come from far away to experience the incredible geography of the island so it makes sense that you will want photos to capture your precious memories. Booking a photography tour with a local photographer is one of our highest recommendations for your honeymoon.

Local photographers know where and when to go, where to have you pose and the best times of the day so you can avoid the crowds as much as possible.

Rent a car

A honeymoon is no excuse to miss out on activities and sights around the island. After spending a few days in Oia or Fira, you might want to look into renting a vehicle or ATV quad bike and set out in search of more beautiful spots.

Some places that you will not want to miss are:

  • Akrotiri Lighthouse – in the traditional village of Megalochori
  • Village of Pyrgos – which used to be the capital of the island and is incredibly well-preserved with a beautiful church and lots of cute alleyways for picture taking
  • Beaches – like Perissa and Kamari which will require a car
  • Walk from Fira to Oia – a relatively easy hike with impressive views over the caldera
  • The Ancient town of Akrotiri – for a glimpse into the splendor of times past and a swim at the Red Beach nearby.

Where are you celebrating your vows of eternal love?
